Treaties Recognition Week

The first full week of November is designated as Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario. During this week we take time to honour the importance of treaties, and their role in Canadian history.

OPL Land Acknowledgement:

Oakville Public Library is situated on Treaty #14 and Treaty #22 lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee. Oakville is currently home to many different First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Regardless of where we come from, we are all interconnected through the land that we live on, water that we use and air that we breathe. We are committed to a continuous learning journey in allyship. We seek to elevate Indigenous voices and lived experience to cultivate reconciliation in Oakville.

Why Treaties Recognition Week matters:

This annual commemoration was launched in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. It aims to honour the importance of treaties and helps students and residents of Ontario learn more about treaty rights and relationships. It represents one of many steps on Ontario’s journey of healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

How can you take part?

Join a library program:

As part of Treaties Recognition Week, various OPL branches will be hosting Moccasin Identifier Project programs; these are hands-on workshops where participants can create their own moccasin stencil art.

The Moccasin Identifier is an Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of Indigenous Treaties and history across Canada. Their mission is to cover Canada in Moccasins, creating visual and educational reminders of the significance of treaties and the Indigenous relationships to the land. For more information, visit Moccasin Identifier.
