Loans, Limits and Fees

OPL has permanently eliminated overdue fines!

Overdue fines are barriers to library access and OPL is committed to reducing barriers and supporting equitable access to literacy in our community. 

We are removing overdue fines to reduce the economic impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our community. Our goal is to provide our community with access to library collections without fear of penalty during these uncertain times

Overdue Items

To ensure borrowed items are still returned in a timely fashion, customers will be notified by phone or email when items are coming due and overdue.  

Accounts with more than six (6) overdue library items will not be able to borrow more physical materials until the overdue items are renewed or returned.

Please see below for loan periods, limits, and fees associated with our borrowed materials. 

Account limits

  • A maximum of 100 items may be borrowed per card.

  • ​A maximum of 5 renewals if there are no holds on the item.

  • Library privileges will be temporarily suspended due any of the following circumstances:

    • ​$35 or more in fines

    • Six (6) or more items overdue

    • ​Items are overdue by 5 weeks or more

Administration fees

  • There is a non-refundable $20 fee for each account that is sent to the collection agency

  • There is a non-refundable $40 fee for not sufficient funds (NSF) cheques returned from the bank

Holds

  • A $1 fee will apply to holds not picked up within 5 days of notification

  • Holds are limited to 50 items per card

  • To cancel holds visit My OPL on our website, our app, or by calling one of our branches and speaking with a staff member

Library cards

  • New cards are free

  • $2 replacement fee for lost adult card

  • $1 replacement fee for lost children’s card

Lost or damaged items

  • ​Items are considered lost after 50 days overdue. 

    • ​Exception: Fast lane items are considered lost after 7 days overdue. ​

  • Lost or damaged audiovisual containers, cases, kit bags and RFID tags will be charged a $7 processing fee.

  • Lost or damaged kit pieces will be charged their value plus a $7 processing fee.

  • Lost or damaged OSMO will be charged a $140 replacement fee.

  • For all other items, library will determine it’s replacement cost plus a $7 processing fee​.

  • If you find a lost item that you have already paid the replacement fee for and it is returned with its receipt within 60 days, you will be refunded the value paid minus the $7 processing fee.

  • ​All costs will be reflected in your My OPL account.

Overdue items

  • OPL has permanently eliminated overdue fines. You will not be charged for overdue items, however, you will be charged once the item is considered lost. 

    • All non-Fast Lane items will be considered lost after 50 days overdue. 
    • Fast Lane items will be considered lost after 7 days overdue.
    • ​Interlibrary loan items will be considered lost after 7 days overdue.
  • Replacement charges along with a $7 processing fee will be charged per lost item.

  • ​All costs and fees will be reflected in your My OPL account.

  • A billing notice will be sent when your account totals $35 or more.

  • Overdue accounts may be submitted to a collection agency.

  • ​To remove fees associated with overdue items marked as "lost", please return items to any branch or contact us

Overdue Notices

  • Overdue notices are generated at 3 days, 10 days, and 21 days.

  • You will receive notices either by email, phone, or text​. 

  • ​To change how the library contacts you please contact your local branch.

Books

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 21 days.

  • High demand items may have their loan period reduced from 21 days to 14 days.

  • Limits to number of loans may apply.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Fast Lane Books

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

Magazines

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • ​Items cannot be renewed.

Compact Discs (Music CDs and Audiobooks)

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 21 days.

  • High demand items may have their loan period reduced from 21 days to 14 days.

  • CDs or audiobooks can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Fast Lane DVDs/Blu-ray

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items.
  • Items can be borrowed for 3 days.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

DVDs/Blu-ray Films

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

DVDs/Blu-ray TV Series

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 21 days.

  • High demand items may have their loan period reduced from 21 days to 14 days.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Electronic Games

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items.
  • Loan period varies based on the item, and on any restrictions of loan period, imposed by lending source.
  • Items are not able to be renewed.
  • All ILLO materials which are not returned after 7 days past the assigned due date, will be set to lost automatically. A non-refundable lost fee, assessed by the lending library, will be applied to the user’s account. Once applied, these fees/charges are permanent and cannot be reversed.

Storytelling Kits

  • Holds can be placed on these items. 

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Maximum of 1 Storytelling Kit can be borrowed per card.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Book Club Kits

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 42 days.

  • Maximum of 2 Book Club Kits can be borrowed per card.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

Book/CD Kits

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 21 days.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Nature Kits

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 21 days.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 5 times if there are no holds on the item.

Sport Equipment Kits

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

Laptops

  • Laptops are only to be used in branch.

  • ​Holds cannot be placed on these items.

  • Item can be borrowed for 2 hours at a time.

  • Maximum of 1 laptop can be borrowed per card.

  • Laptops can be renewed if there is no waiting list. Please enquire with staff.

OSMO

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Maximum of 1 OSMO can be borrowed per card.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

Wi-Fi Hotspots

  • Holds cannot be placed on these items, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Items cannot be renewed.

  • Maximum of 1 Wi-Fi Hotspot can be borrowed per card.

CO2 Monitors

  • Holds can be placed on these items.

  • Items can be borrowed for 7 days.

  • Maximum of 1 CO2 Monitor can be borrowed per card.

  • Can be renewed a maximum of 2 times if there are no holds on the item.
