This April, readers are invited to take part in One eRead Canada by diving into Valid by Chris Bergeron, with the English version translated by Natalia Hero.

From April 1 to April 30, hundreds of Canadian libraries - including OPL - will offer Valid as an ebook in English and French, with no waitlists or holds. The French audiobook will also be available without holds, making it easier than ever to read along and join the conversation.

What is One eRead Canada?

Launched in 2019, One eRead Canada is an annual initiative by the Canadian Urban Libraries Council to promote digital reading through public libraries, while also raising awareness about issues that libraries face in providing access to ebooks and audiobooks.

Why digital access matters

While digital reading continues to grow in popularity, many bestselling titles - including works by Canadian and Indigenous authors - remain unavailable to public libraries due to restrictive licensing practices by major publishers.

Even when titles are available, libraries often face excessively high prices for digital formats compared to physical books. Unlike print copies, which libraries own indefinitely, ebooks and audiobooks are often licensed for limited time periods at significantly higher costs, making it harder for libraries to provide equitable access to stories readers love.

By participating in One eRead Canada, libraries across the country are not only encouraging a shared reading experience but also advocating for better pricing models and broader access to digital content for all Canadians.

About the book

Valid is a genre-bending speculative look at a dark future that shares the story of one trans woman leading a revolution.

Set in a disturbingly transfigured Montreal in the year 2045, Valid is a monologue delivered over the span of eight hours by Christelle, a seventy-year-old trans woman forced to live as a man in order to survive. Speaking to her captor, an ever–more powerful AI, she turns the tables and mounts her own revolution by showing her truest self. Part autofiction, part dystopic speculation on an all-too-possible future characterized by corporate power, ecological collapse, and political havoc, Valid is an ambitious work that is as much philosophical as it is confessional.
