Emancipation Day
August 1 is Emancipation Day, a day on which we celebrate the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada.
In partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton and the Oakville Museum, join us for guided tours of Bronte Harbour or Kerr Village and explore sites related to Oakville’s Black History.
- Oakville’s Black History in Kerr: Walking Tour

Each August 1, Canadians are invited to reflect and engage in the ongoing fight against both anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination. In 2008, Ontario declared August 1 as Emancipation Day, the day Canada abolished slavery and throughout the British Empire in the mid-19th century. The day also recognizes Oakville’s role in the Underground Railroad as a port of entry to Canada.
