Celebrate International Literacy Day
Observed annually on September 8, International Literacy Day highlights the importance of reading and lifelong learning. It's a reminder of how literacy opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and connection. Whether you're discovering a new author, sharing stories with your family, or exploring OPL's collections and programs, September is the perfect time to celebrate the power of reading.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a time to honour the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, along with their families and communities. The day also commemorates the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school, inspiring the Orange Shirt Day movement.
This is an opportunity to learn more about the rich and diverse voices, experiences, histories, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, while reflecting on the lasting impacts of residential schools and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.
As Elder Stephen Paquette of Wikwemikong First Nation, who serves as OPL's Indigenous Knowledge Guide, shared:
"Sometimes the truth makes us uncomfortable, but it's still the truth. And to learn what the truth is about Canadian history and that relationship, from before Canada was even a country to what it exists as now, is a conversation."
While September 30 serves as an important annual reminder, meaningful reconciliation requires ongoing learning, listening, and action throughout the year. We encourage community members to explore local events, resources, and opportunities for reflection.
