The Seed Library

The OPL Seed Library is an educational project that provides customers with the opportunity to grow their own plants, harvest their own food, and participate in a community-wide sharing initiative. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, stop by any OPL branch to pick up three free seed packets of your choice!

The 2025 Seed Library will launch March 3. Check out this blog post for programs, reading lists, and more.

How it works

No formal check-out is required - simply visit an OPL branch, select up to three seed packets, and take them home to plant. Seeds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. Availability may vary by location, so we recommend contacting your local branch before visiting to confirm their stock.

Customers are encouraged to nurture their plants and, once mature, harvest seeds to donate back to the library. This cycle of borrowing, growing, harvesting, and returning helps sustain the Seed Library for future growers. Empty donation envelopes are available at all branches for those who wish to contribute seeds.

Available seeds – Spring 2025

Each season, the Seed Library offers a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers. While availability may change, some commonly offered seeds include:

Bush Beans Chives
Pepper - Early Cal Wonder Pole Beans
Four O'Clocks Squash - Butternut
Kale Tomatoes - Bonny Best
Marigold Tomatoes - Sweetie (Cherry)
Parsley Donations - limited stock of
assorted flowers and vegetables

Thank you to our donors

The OPL Seed Library was established in 2017 and continues to operate because of generous donations made by avid Oakville Public Library supporters, Richard and Barbara Birkett. We are grateful for their commitment to building and strengthening a culture of sharing and sustainability within the Oakville community.

The OPL Seed Library continues to run on support with donated seeds from the Ontario Rock Garden and Hardy Plant Society.
