National Indigenous History Month

Oakville Public Library is situated on Treaty #14 and Treaty #22 lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee. Oakville is currently home to many different First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. We encourage the community to learn and explore the voices and stories of Indigenous Peoples in Canada with our resources. OPL has a wide variety of resources and booklists to help you learn more about Indigenous history, experiences and talented artists and writers.

Additionally, June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, which is a further opportunity to recognize and celebrate the heritage, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. According to the Government of Canada, “In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.”
